Heat the milk gently in another pot, but don’t let it bubble up.

In a small pot, bring the water to a gentle boil.

Pour the spiced mixture through a strainer directly into the pot of warm milk. Stir in sweetener until dissolved.

Toss in the cinnamon, vanilla, and star anise (if using). Shut off the heat and cover the pot. Skip this part if you’re using ground spices.

Let those spices soak and release their flavors for about 10 minutes. Throw in the tea and steep another 3 to 5 minutes if you’re using it.
